Surfing Safari

Day 3 into my trip to the north island... We started out in Auckland, driving south to Mt. Eden, the dormant volcano upon which most of the city of Auckland is built. From there we could see the famous "one tree hill," which no longer has any trees on it... We made our way out of the city (a huge, sprawling city - apparently the 6th largest in the world by land area) and to the Coromandel peninsula to the small town of Hahei. Hahei is a modest beach town, with lots of vacation homes. Hahei has some amazing kayaking and the famous cathedral cove - but I decided to hang out on the beach instead. My body clock is still confused by being awake during daylight hours so I often feel the need to fall alseep at random hours.

The next day we drove across the island to the small surf town of Raglan. Raglan is world famous for having the 2nd longest left hand surf break in the world (the longest is in Peru somewhere), so the only obvious choice activity for the day was surfing. Now I'm a bit ashamed of having lived in California my whole life and having pretty much no surfing skills. But to be fair, my surfing lessons have always consisted of going out to the beach with Tammy or Debar and saying "ok, let's go for it!" But the instructors at Raglan were great and the waves were cooperative and I decided to stay an extra day. I'm real sore today but will probably take a board out again later today and try my hand again. Tomorrow it's off to Rotorua, a town that smells like rotton eggs! Aparently that's a good thing...?
