Where Women Glow and Men Plunder

Landed in Sydney a few days ago and got on a bus going north, up the east coast. The first day was a long day on the bus to Coff's Harbour, a small town on the coast. We got in late and were staying a bit out of town, so there wasn't much to do. Except relax in the luxurious accomodation. We stayed in a sweet hotel on the beach, with Le Cordon Blue style restaurant and wonderful food. I had a queen bed to myself and the place had a big jacuzzi and pool. It was just a bit of a step up from the hostels I've been staying at. Also worth mentioning is the bus... spacious with furry headrests. It's also made by Mercedes Benz...we travel in style!

The next day brought us to Byron Bay, the easternmost point of the Australian mainland and a small surf town. The weather was great so we enjoyed lunch and football on the beach. There's something wierd about the sand here...even though it looks like normal beach-variety sand, whenever you walk on it, it makes a high-pitched squeaking sound. I've heard of "booming sand" in the deserts, which makes really low frequency sounds and is apparently important enough to deserve SURF funding, but I'd never heard of squeaking sand before. I'm sure somebody out there knows what's going on with it though.

After Bay it was a short drive to the Corrumba wildlife sanctuary, where I got to play with kangaroos and take a picture with a koala!

After that we continued on to Surfer's Paradise, a very aptly named city. Miles and miles of beach with beautiful waves grace this city for daytime activity. The city stays awake through the night - many of the shops and stores are open as late as the bars and clubs. I had a pretty strenuous morning, what with sitting on the beach and all, and now it's about that time... when laundry calls. Tomorrow we leave the coast and head inland, to stay at a traditional aussie farm for a night or two. Hopefully I don't get eaten by one of the thousands of Australian animals that can kill you!
